Following a 30-month quality improvement project, St. Paul’s Hospital underwent formal accreditation assessment for Baby Friendly Initiative designation on Feb 21-23, 2023.
BFI provides a continuous quality improvement framework for best practices related to infant feeding. Resources offered at SPH and to staff include:
- Private Breastfeeding Room: Room 372 on the 3rd floor of the Burrard Building, for visitor and/or staff use.
- Staff Support with Infant Feeding: Staff returning to work who need support navigating infant feeding can connect with our lactation consultant at: lactationconsultant@providencehealth.bc.ca.
- Breastfeeding Drop-in: Every Wednesday from 10:00am-12:00pm in the Maternity Conference Room, 3rd floor of the Providence Building just outside the Maternity Unit, led by our team of nurse and physician lactation consultants. This is a drop in group for timely access to breastfeeding supports for families who birthed at St. Paul’s. Families can expect baby weights, breastfeeding support and the opportunity to meet other new parents. Can self refer, do not need to register. If further assistance is required, referral will be made to the Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic.
- Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic: Every Monday and Friday, led by Dr. Kara Jansen, Family Practitioner and Lactation Consultant. Requires referral by a care provider.
